Respite care at home in Bedfordshire

Respite Care That Gives Family Carers a Break

Looking after someone you love is rewarding, and it is tiring. Our carers step in at home for a few hours, a few days or while you are away, so you can rest knowing they are well supported.

Ask about availability, no obligation.

What Is Respite Care at Home?

Respite care is short-term care that gives a family carer time off. Instead of your relative going somewhere unfamiliar, a Sunrise carer comes to their home and follows the routine you already have in place.

It can be planned and regular, such as one afternoon every week so you can see friends or attend your own appointments. It can also cover a longer period while you go on holiday, recover from an operation or simply need a rest.

Everything starts with a conversation about the person you care for, how you do things and what would help you most. We then write it into a care plan so nothing important is lost when you step away.

Who Respite Care Helps

  • You care for a partner or parent full time.

You have not had a proper break in months and you are running on empty.

  • You have a holiday, wedding or trip planned.

You want to go, but only if you know someone reliable is at home.

  • You need time for your own health.

You have an operation, appointments or recovery of your own to manage.

  • You work and care.

A regular weekly break would help you keep both going without burning out.

What Respite Care Can Include

Respite visits can cover anything in the existing care routine that we have agreed in the care plan:

  • Personal care, washing and dressing
  • Preparing meals and drinks, and support to eat well
  • Medication reminders and support with prescribed medication as agreed
  • Company, conversation, hobbies and short outings
  • Light housework, laundry and keeping the home tidy
  • Help getting up in the morning and settling at night
  • Checking in on pets and keeping the house routine running
  • A written note of each visit so you can see how things went

What Respite Care Does Not Include

  • Nursing or clinical tasks, such as injections or wound care
  • Respite in a care home or residential setting: we provide care in the person's own home only
  • Overnight or live-in cover, unless we confirm this is available
  • Emergency cover at very short notice: we will always try, but cannot guarantee it

If the person you care for has complex medical needs, we will tell you honestly what we can safely provide and help you look at other options.

Your Routine, Carried On

You know the person you care for best. We ask you to tell us everything that makes their day go well:
  • The routine. Wake up times, favourite meals, the programmes they never miss.

  • The little things. How they take their tea, what calms them, what to avoid.

  • Culture and faith. Food, prayer times, language and family customs are respected.

  • How you want to hear from us. A message after each visit, a call at the end of the day or only if something needs your attention.

Respite Options

  • Regular short break

A few hours each week so you can rest, shop or see friends

  • Day cover

Several visits across one day while you are out

  • Planned holiday cover

Daily visits for a week or more while you are away

  • Recovery cover

Extra support while you get over an illness or operation

Visits can last from [MINIMUM VISIT LENGTH] to [MAXIMUM VISIT LENGTH]. Minimum booking periods and notice times apply.

Carers You Can Leave Them With

Stepping away is easier when you trust the person stepping in. Every Sunrise carer completes:
  • Induction and the Care Certificate
  • Moving and handling, medication support and infection control training
  • Safeguarding adults training
  • Dementia awareness training
  • Enhanced DBS checks before their first visit

Wherever possible, we introduce the carer before your break so your relative sees a familiar face.
